An Ode To My Grandfather

I am writing this poem in memory of my grandfather who passed away on April 17, 2021. Being an only child of parents who were working professionals, my paternal grandparents raised me until I came abroad to pursue my undergraduate studies. It had been a year and a half since I last saw him, this poem is my attempt to honor and celebrate the life that he led.

In the depths of darkness, I see your light,
Your beaming smile is forever etched in my mind.

Our walks back home from school, your passion for history,
Of wanting to beat me in games of carom and badminton,
Why you let me deliberately win sometimes is no mystery.

Right from when I was born, you took care of me,
Raised me into the young woman that I have come to be.

I remember your hearty laughter, you pacing around the room listening to old Hindi songs while I did my homework.
I ask myself, will I ever be able to meet a man like you again,
So kind, so warm and so full of love and respect to give to everyone he befriends in his way.

How blessed was I, that I got the fortune to meet a person like you in my life.
I thought you were invincible, that you would stay with me forever,
Had I known you were going to be one of god’s angels,
I painstakingly regret not openly expressing my love and affection to you in words ever.

Some days my heart feels like it will explode from the hurt I feel,
The thought of not meeting you ever again breaks my heart into pieces which no remedy can heal.
Your loss has left a void that nothing can ever fill,
But your goodness and memories will be treasured by me for as long as I shall live.

I don’t know if I will ever recover completely from your loss,
I will learn to live with it,
But the fact that keeps me going is,
I am a part of you that continues to live.
I will make you proud, always and forever remember you,
I hope my words reach you,
Because I loved you and will always continue to love you.

Until we meet again….
Take good care of my angel god:) keep him safe, you got the best one on your side now.
